Open call for artist-in-residence proposals

Since 2005, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) has established a vibrant residency program that has hosted over 150 artists and their collaborators, spanning theater, dance, music, video, and installation. We are pleased to announce the new deadlines for 2012 artist-in-residence open call program on January 17, May 14, and September 17, and new application guidelines and application form.

We encourage applications for a wide range of projects from a diversity of artists, composers, directors, choreographers, and performers from international artists of different cultural and geographical backgrounds.

We are open to proposals for all phases of a project, from initial concept to full production.

In addition to our ongoing residency open call, we also have additional special initiatives:

Creative Research: Provides artists, writers, and theorists with the opportunity to conduct research over extended periods of time (minimum six weeks).

Audio Production / Post-Production: For sound recording, development of multichannel sound works, documentation, mastering, mixing, film scoring, or any other task involving microphones, speakers, consoles and computers.

Video Production / Post-Production: For multiple camera shoots, documentation of a performance, development of multichannel video projection, digital video post-production, or any project involving HD video cameras, computers, and projectors.

** Please note that residency proposals do not need to fall into one of these special initiatives.

Our unique facilities offer four major venues including a concert hall, theater, and two black box studios, in addition to artist-in-residence studios, and a state of the art infrastructure.

[HvEXAS] OPEN CALL: seeking voice actors for theater/dance project

OPEN CALL for voice actors

EMPAC is seeking three voice actors to participate in the production of the theater/dance project Flat, directed by Belgian-based artist Rodrigo Pardo, which will be presented at EMPAC on Saturday, February 4, 2012 (and will tour internationally after that).

We are looking for one male voice (ideally between 30 to 50 years old) who will be a main character in the story, and two female voices (late twenties to 40s) for smaller yet vital roles. Participation will be compensated.

Minimum time commitment required:

- meeting with the director: second week of January 2012 (specific time and date TBD)

- rehearsal and recording: Thursday, January 19 and/or Friday, January 20

Both the meeting and rehearsal/recording will take place at EMPAC.

Rodrigo Pardo's dance/theater project Flat combines storytelling, video projections, and aerial performance. In the narrative, a man wakes up in his apartment feeling strange, not realizing he is upside down. The audience hears his inner monologue via headphones as he discovers his new reality and enters into his dreams; he must either learn how to live anew or try to change the world back to a familiar state. Inspired by the magical realism of J.L. Borges, Flat immerses both the performer and the audience in an intimate situation, shifting our perspective on what constitutes our reality.

A string quartet performance in two acts featuring three pieces from the 1960s to the present that play with conventions of music notation and performance, and a haunting 30-minute piece from the 1990s with an uncanny spectral interplay.

The JACK Quartet electrifies audiences worldwide with "explosive virtuosity" (The Boston Globe) and "viscerally exciting performances" (The New York Times). David Patrick Stearns of The Philadelphia Inquirer proclaimed their performance to be "among the most stimulating new-music concerts of my experience," and NPR listed their performance as one of The Best New York Alt-Classical Concerts Of 2010.

Comprising violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Kevin McFarland, JACK is focused on commissioning and performing new works, and the quartet has worked closely with composers Helmut Lachenmann and György Kurtág, among others. JACK also offers fresh interpretations of early music, including works by Don Carlo Gesualdo, Guillaume de Machaut, and Josquin des Prez.

Wim Wenders is one of the leading representatives of new German cinema. Notable films include Lightening Over Water (1980); Wings of Desire (1987), for which he was awarded Best Director at Cannes, the European Film Festival, and German Film Awards; Until the End of the World (1991); Faraway, So Close! (1993); The End of Violence (1997); Buena Vista Social Club (1999); The Million Dollar Hotel (2000); and most recently, the 3-D film Pina (2011).

In the 1990s, Wim Wenders became chairman and then president of the European Film Academy. Since 2003, he has been a professor at the College of Fine Arts in Hamburg.

The Eternal Return is a collection of films that begins with the idea that time is a lie. Reveling in déjà vu and non-linear timelines, the series is inspired by such varied sources as Nietzsche's notion of the eternal recurrence and the multiverse hypothesis in physics. Each of the films in the series is structured by a central narrative loop and a thematic focus on the incommensurability of the momentary and the eternal.

Lue is the founder of BioVisions, a collaborative initiative led by Harvard scientists to improve the beauty and precision of science visualization. Japanther: The Cake of The 3 Towers

The three towers are prison, museum, and (housing) project, albeit loosely. Music, video, and performance draw parallel lines between three industrial archetypes. Moving through these structures, the artists utilize fragments of their environment to envision a utopian creative endgame. Meanwhile, an Austrian super villain (Florian Reither) attempts to unite and destroy the dystopian worlds. The Cake of The 3 Towers (TCo3T) is a collaborative project featuring Japanther, Schuyler Maehl, Florian Reither, and Felice Faison commissioned for Quote Unquote: Experiments in Time-Based Text, an interdisciplinary series presenting work by artists that use an existing text as a departure point for installation, film, and performance.

Japanther is an art project established circa 2001 by Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to wild interactive live showings in unconventional settings, the duo has collaborated with Dan Graham, Gelitin, Eileen Myles, ninjasonik, and Spank Rock, among others. Japanther was featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial as part of Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty and the 2011 Venice Biennial as part of Gelitin's Some Like It Hot performance. The duo has made a name for themselves through unique performance situations including shows with synchronized swimmers, oversized puppets, from out of the back of a moving truck, alongside giant dinosaurs, and with BMXers flying off the walls of the Whitney sculpture garden. http://japanther.com/

In the final installment of this three-part lecture series, Rensselaer professor Michael Century presents a fresh reading of today's experimental media art scene by surveying key works, personalities and movements of the past century and laying out a framework for forecasting its future.

III. Virtuality to Virtuosity, 1974–2011, moves beyond what some have termed the crisis of new media art today—its relegation to "cool obscurity" by the institutional art world, and its simultaneous co-option by the information industries—by sketching out an anti-anti-utopian view of the potential of experimental artworks as "extraordinary freedom machines."

Half man and half horse, the wild and badly behaved satyrs were legendary companions of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and theater.

Dionysia retells the myth of Thyestes and Atreus, exposing the social and sexual politics of the late fifth century BC. The satyrs invade with their full-blown physical expression of the bestial qualities inherent in contemporary life, channeling forgotten rites and revealing a world both barbaric and beautiful.

A Circus of One, US, 15-minute looping video installation

A Circus of One is a 16 mm black-and-white film directed by visual artist Alison Crocetta in collaboration with composer Jason Treuting. This film records Crocetta as a clownish figure within a one-ring circus completing a series of eight acts that run the gamut from feats of daring to absurd gestures. These performance actions form a filmic garland with Treuting's score that draws inspiration from historic circus music and the tradition of musique concrète.

A film following the mayhem created by a ragtag musical militia that embarks on an impotent invasion through a parallel universe, where their exuberant music is out of sync and unheard. The two worlds are finally unified when the band masters the tempo and patience of empathy.

Fauna creates an audiovisual world of confined and fantastical spaces, setting in motion a poetic dialogue between nature and artifice. Bodies possessed by different states inhabit landscapes configured in these restricted spaces. The film evokes a rhythmic relationship between body and location, dark and latent, questioning the concreteness of reality and life as staging.

Sound design and sound edit: John Kilgore

Choreographer and filmmaker Pooh Kaye's alter ego, Wild Girl, played by Alex Clack, has a busy day weeding the dandelions, raking up dead brush, and mowing the lawn. Dandelions swirl in animated patterns around her, the flowers popping in and out of her ears and mouth as she tries to speak. The ground swallows her and spits her out, and piles of brush attack her as she tries to rid her lawn of dead branches. Kaye returns to her early Super 8 films from the 1970s, which explored the human body's relationship to the world.

The DANCE MOViES Commission is supported by EMPAC's Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and the Performing Arts. It is open to artists based in North and South America who are making video, film, and installation work in dance. These premieres compromise the fourth cycle of commissions - the fifth cycle's recipients are in production and will premiere in Fall 2012.

OPEN CALL

Seeking female volunteers to perform

We are seeking up to 20 female volunteers (ages 18 - 81) to participate in a silent Greek chorus as part of the performances.

The time commitment required:

Rehearsal on Wednesday, November 9 from 6 - 9 PM
Dress rehearsal on Thursday, November 10 from 7 - 9 PM (you may leave after the first act)
Performances on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12 from 7 - 10 PM

We are looking for performers or non-performers who have an interest in contemporary theater and a willingness to share the stage with Poor Dog Group's stellar actors! The idea will be that you would enter the stage for 5-10 minutes as a mob of silent onlookers. You will have a simple movement sequence to perform. Clothes are casual and your own.

Come explore the collaborative process of contemporary performance with the artists of Poor Dog Group (PDG). This four hour session will expose and examine the unique artistic practices of the PDG collaborators. Participants will learn how to build a new theatrical experience in a collaborative environment; learning the fundamentals of constructing an experimental performance piece with the tools of original story structure, character development, movement, and text.

Poor Dog Group is a new Los Angeles-based collective of like-minded performance and media artists committed to nurturing a distinctive aesthetic through adventurous collaboration. Their mission is to develop original theatrical expression through the creation of new work and radical reexaminations of existing texts; to redefine, educate and expand perceptions of performance and theatrical form; to have an accessibility for a new audience; to use experimental methods of the body, text, and technology; to craft new American theater; and to develop the cultivation of a limitless and periodic space.

Dionysia was commissioned and originally performed at The Getty Villa Lab with additional support from UCLA.

An unexpected pop music spectacle by reclusive singer, songwriter, and pianist Francis Farewell Starlite

Reclusive singer, songwriter, and pianist Francis Farewell Starlite is currently in residence at EMPAC creating a new pop music spectacle, The White Room. The White Room references the small area used by NASA astronauts to access spacecraft. In this room, astronauts make final preparations before entering the spacecraft such as donning parachute packs, putting on helmets, and detaching portable air conditioning units.

Starlite's single vision and explosive live performances have drawn comparisons to David Byrne and James Brown, among others. Last year, he toured the US with rap superstar Drake (at his personal invitation), as well as opened for MGMT, Ke$ha, La Roux, and Mark Ronson.

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), founded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is an international hub for art, performance, science, and technology — offering adventurous interdisciplinary public events, support for artists and scholars engaged in creative research, and the resources of a state-of-the art facility for digital media production, research, and performance situated on a college campus.

EMPAC 2011-2012 presentations, residencies, research, and commissions are supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Science Foundation, the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts (with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; additional funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Community Connections Fund of the MetLife Foundation, and the Boeing Company Charitable Trust), and the New York State Council for the Arts. Starlite's single vision and explosive live performances have drawn comparisons to David Byrne and James Brown, among others. Last year, he toured the US with rap superstar Drake (at his personal invitation), as well as opened for MGMT, Ke$ha, La Roux, and Mark Ronson.

Workshop with Poor Dog Group

Come explore the collaborative process of contemporary performance with the artists of Poor Dog Group (PDG). This 4-hour session will expose and examine the unique artistic practices of the PDG collaborators. Participants will learn how to build a new theatrical experience in a collaborative environment; learning the fundamentals of constructing an experimental performance piece with the tools of original story structure, character development, movement, and text.

The workshop can accommodate 20 participants. Prior experience not required. Please RSVP to Liz Slagus at slague@rpi.edu by Monday, October 31.
