[HvEXAS] Fwd: EMPAC Announces Artist & Scholar/Researcher in Residence Programs

EMPAC ANNOUNCES ARTIST & SCHOLAR/RESEARCHER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMS

EMPAC is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for both its Artist in Residence and its Scholar and Researcher in Residence programs.

The Artist in Residence program is available to individuals, groups, ensembles or collectives to develop new approaches and new works in the time-based arts. There is no deadline for applications — they will be accepted and reviewed throughout the year.

The intent of the program is to support work that cannot be created or realized elsewhere. As EMPAC is part of a technological research university and carries the word "experimental" in its name, goals may turn out to be unobtainable or dead ends, be they artistic or technical. Residencies may be used to take risks and experiment with new ideas, which are not necessarily attached to specific performances or a finished work.

On occasion, EMPAC will announce special initiatives for the residency program. At this time we're announcing two:

Audio Production / Post-Production — EMPAC is an ideal place to record sound, produce multichannel pieces or a 5.1/7.1/10.2 DVD, document works of sound art, master, perform complex mixing for film with several consoles, and any other task involving microphones, speakers, and computers.
Video Production / Post-Production — EMPAC's capacity for video parallels that of audio. It is an ideal location for doing a multi-camera shoot, creating documentation of a performance, working with multichannel video projection, and all aspect of digital post-production for film, video art — any project that involves HD video c ameras, computers, or projectors. Our facility is also ideal for recording live musicians for film scoring.

The Scholar and Researcher in Residence Program is available to visiting scholars and researchers whose research is directed at the intersection of physical, human-scale environments and the technological domain. There is no deadline for applications, which will be accepted and reviewed throughout the year.

EMPAC aims to create an environment of fertile creation, cross-pollination, and intellectual stimulation. Visiting scholars and researchers will participate in the formation of an intellectual community in scientific and engineering disciplines that may also engage perceptual and artistic knowledge and practice. EMPAC will also be a platform for research activities in areas such as augmented reality, virtual reality, scientific visualization, audification, haptics, human/machine interfaces and interaction, auralization, and multi-modal modeling in large-scale, fully media-integrated environments.

[HvEXAS] Nona Hendrix sings thru her Tutu!

Nona Hendryx will perform in the GE Theatre at Proctors on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. as part of our Dangerous Music Series.  Begining her career as one third of the Funk Rock group Labelle (best known for the hit "Lady Marmalade"), Nona Hendryx emerged as the primary writer for the trio, breaking free of the "girl group" pigeon-holing of the time to fully embrace the groups previously unheard of Space Age Glam Goddess look and sound.

Nona Hendryx believes the voice is the most complex instrument, and has made finding novel and compelling ways to use it her lifelong journey.  Using wireless electronic instruments, Nona is able to produce vocal and instrumental sounds along with choreographed movement, creating what she calls "SoundPlays".  Nona uses both prepared and improvised musical compositions, along with random triggered images and lights to create unique and unrepeatable "audio tutu" performances.  With non-traditional, self-powered instruments such as computers, samplers and wireless microphones, Nona is "untethered" and able to use the entire space as a stage.  She considers the ability to perform in unexpected spaces inspiring and exciting.

Over the past three years Nona has worked with many young rappers, poets and hip-hop artists, ranging from a cameo appearance in an India Arie video, to a duet with Bounty Killer, to production and co-writer for a new film, On the One, with Rahzel, Dead Prez's M1, and Res's producers Doc and Khaliyl.

Nona is a Grammy Nominee for "Rock This House" (featuring Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones on guitar) and an Emmy Nominee for her collaboration with Jason Miles on the composition "Children of the World" recorded by Sounds of Blackness for the Disney animated children's special, "People".

Tickets for Nona Hendryx in the GE Theatre at Proctors on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. as part of the Dangerous Music Series are $16. Tickets are available at Proctors Box Office, (518) 346-6204, or online at proctors.org.

words:

Valentine's Day might have come and gone (there are apparently photos
to prove that such things bombastically happened), but when Goodship
and Rev. Hall get together (cough - rescind their numerous restraining
orders against each other - cough), you know it is some "Joanie Loves
Chachi" mess all night long. I mean, not "Joanie Loves Chachi" in the
literal sense (Erin Moran and Scott Baio are professional bailers -
but you know Al Delvecchio is a definite maybe), but more in the
metaphoric, so good you can barely remember it hotness. On the roster
this time around will be Albany's blastic Von Trapp Family Singers
proportion Aficionado and Brooklyn's perpetual latchkey kid pelham123,
who will be joining your regularly scheduled blow-up We Are Architects
and mannequins Back From Japan + Jenkins. Pulling the digital wool
over your eyes will be blar, skfl, and a legend in this area, VJ
Mitsubishi. Tomorrow, we might die - but tonight, we frolick! Be
sure to wear comfortable shoes for said frolicking and bring moolah
for those Rev. Hall bartenders (there will be no strippers - don't
make that mistake again, Ebenezer).

P.S. Oh my lordy lordy. That Valentine's Prom shindig with Tittsworth
was quite an amazing event, and if you can't seem to remember it,
check out our amazing prom photos by Will Gill (http://www.flickr.com/photos/openlens/
) over at our blog (http://www.goodship.net/blog).
