[HvEXAS] TNO Afterparty | November 26th (Black Friday) | Daisy Baker's | 9pm-2am | Properly Chilled & Ryan Kick All Night! | FREE!

The Troy Night Out Afterparty – November 2010!
9pm-2am
18 to get in, 21 to drink (ID required)
FREE!!

We had mixed feelings about what to do with ourselves on this last Friday of November, seeing how the TNO Afterparty falls not only the day after Thanksgiving (no surprise there), but also on Black Friday (umm, also no surprise)...but about those mixed feelings.

We're stuffing ourselves for Thanksgiving, and then doing it again with left-overs the next day. But there's a problem with our tryptophanic dreams of slumber...BLACK FRIDAY! So, while we're way chilled out on trypto, we're also hyped up about shopping. We think you will be too. That's why we've kept it simple and brought in the only two DJs who can take care of those extremes; Properly Chilled and Ryan Kick. It's like a fork full of pumpkin pie in your right hand, and a glass of wine in your right. Yeah, we thought it was a pretty damn clever move too.

9pm-2am: Properly Chilled & Ryan Kick

The last friday of every month, come for Troy Night Out and stay out late with us! Daisy Baker's, 9pm-2am, FREE, dance till you can't.

EXHIBITION
Uncertain Spectator
November 18, 2010 – January 29, 2011
Monday – Saturday, noon to 6 PM
Free

A group exhibition confronting anxiety in contemporary art, Uncertain Spectator asks individuals to cross a threshold — to place themselves in situations riddled with tension, confront deeply charged emotional content, and grapple with feelings of apprehension. The works presented deal with a general mood of uneasiness arising from recent political and economic events that frames a future rife with imminent threats. Uncertain Spectator not only responds to these unsettling situations, but also creates them by challenging individuals to step outside of a place of comfort both physically and emotionally.

Opening reception: Thursday, November 18, at 6 PM with a performance by The Troy Chainsaw Ensemble and a screening of Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (starring Björk). There will be free copies of the exhibition catalog distributed for all attending the opening (while supplies last). Curator's tour beginning at 5:30 PM.

Be sure to check out the Uncertain Spectator(s) blog, a regularly updated space for invited cultural theorists, philosophers, artists, and curators to reflect on the manifold manifestations of anxiety within contemporary culture, whether that be through timely events, currents in philosophical thought, or artistic practice.

[HvEXAS] TONIGHT! Georg Friedrich Haas: In Vain | EMPAC | Fri. 11/12, 8 PM

PERFORMANCE
Georg Friedrich Haas: In Vain
Argento Chamber Ensemble (Michel Galante, conductor)
Friday, November 12, 2010, 8 PM
Concert Hall
$15/10/5

A contrast of light and dark, harmony and dissonance, In Vain startles and captivates the senses. Performed by a 24-member chamber orchestra, much of this intense 75-minute composition takes place in total darkness, and the musicians must perform from memory. The cycles between light and darkness are accompanied by dramatic microtonal deviations in the musical plane, which underscore a desire for perfect harmony, while understanding the futility of achieving a perfect harmonic co-existence, both musically and in the world.

"This is music in which you hang on every note, waiting to hear what happens next..." – Andrew Clements, The Guardian

"In the beginning, Georg said, let there be no light. And there was dark. Silky, womb-like India-ink blackness... And it was good. Mind-blowingly good." – Mark Swed, L.A. Times

"It was often hard to believe that these otherworldly sounds were coming from acoustic, not electronic, instruments." – Vivien Schweitzer, The New York Times

+ Read more about the piece here (including a sound sample)
+ See + hear more here (note: this preview is for another performance that has already happened of the same piece by the same ensemble)

Georg Friedrich Haas is an internationally known composer of spectral music. Born in Graz, Austria, Haas studied composition with Gösta Neuwirth and Ivan Eröd, and piano with Doris Wolf at the Musikhochschule (Graz). He pursued graduate studies with Friedrich Cerha at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, and completed composition and computer music courses at Darmstadt and at IRCAM (Paris).

Haas' style focuses on micropolyphony, microintervals, and exploitation of the overtone series. His award-winning works have been part of several festivals, including Wien Modern (Vienna), Musikprotokoll (Graz), Witten, Huddersfield, Royaumont, Venice Biennale, Festival d'Automne (Paris), and Darmstädter Ferienkurse. Haas teaches composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, Switzerland, where he currently resides.

The Argento Chamber Ensemble is the performance arm of the Argento New Music Project. The group has toured widely in the US and abroad in festivals including the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the International Festival of Spectral Music in Turkey, the American Festival of Microtonal Music in New York, and the International Festival of Electro-acoustic music. Known for delivering unforgettable performances that demand technical preparation and a probing interpretive commitment to the music, the ensemble has worked with leading composers such as Pierre Boulez, Tania Leon, Tristan Murail, Elliott Carter, Philippe Hurel, and Philippe Leroux in performance, tours, and recordings.
