EXHIBITION
Uncertain Spectator
November 18, 2010 – January 29, 2011

Last week to catch this exhibition!

A group exhibition confronting anxiety in contemporary art, Uncertain Spectator asks individuals to cross a threshold — to place themselves in situations riddled with tension, confront deeply charged emotional content, and grapple with feelings of apprehension. The works presented deal with a general mood of uneasiness arising from recent political and economic events that frames a future rife with imminent threats. Uncertain Spectator not only responds to these unsettling situations, but also creates them by challenging individuals to step outside of a place of comfort both physically and emotionally.

Verdensteatret: And All the Questionmarks Started to Sing - image courtesy of the artists

EMPAC's spring 2011 schedule of events is packed with performances, exhibitions, screenings, talks, concerts, and happenings that continue to question and test the boundaries of what is—and what could be—at the intersection of art, science, and technology.

Mark your calendars now for events that include a sonic rainforest in the Concert Hall; a dinner and discussion series examining the cosmos, aesthetics, and the perception of movement; a rock song-cycle using the final words of theater's heroines (and anti-heroines); radical reconstructions of Lucinda Childs' choreography; two double features of innovative animation, music videos, and more from the onedotzero festival; a concert featuring works by minimalist music guru Steve Reich; an exhibition with hacked ATM machines and rogue Wi-Fi networks; a viewer driven beatboxing slot machine; six percussionists playing 400 instruments in a concert that features signals from distant pulsars; and more.

And as always, we will have an additional surprise or two, so keep your eyes peeled on this mailing list and visit the EMPAC homepage often.

We look forward to seeing you at some (or all!) of these events!

[HvEXAS] REMINDER: EMPAC | Suzanne Vega, Duncan Sheik, and Kay Matschullat: Carson McCullers Sings About Love | Tonight @ 7 PM | FREE

Hope to see you tonight! Evelyn's Café will be open at 6 PM as well as after the performance.

Here are some preview stories for more information:

WORK IN PROGRESS SHOWING
Suzanne Vega, Duncan Sheik, and Kay Matschullat: Carson McCullers Sings About Love
Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 7 PM
Theater
FREE + open to the public

Singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega, composer Duncan Sheik, and director Kay Matschullat are in residence at EMPAC in January to explore the sound challenges provided by a music-theater piece that combines songs with conversation. Designers Louisa Thompson and Lenore Doxsee will also work with the director to experiment with set and light elements, creating a piece that floats in time and moves between forms. The informal work-in-progress showing will include songs and text from the show, with a chance for discussion with the artists.

In Carson McCullers Sings About Love, Suzanne Vega, in the role of Southern writer Carson McCullers, presents her theory of love, divulging the secrets of the human heart. McCullers often repeated "Nothing human is alien to me" – a quote from the ancient Roman playwright Terence; her own story, as well as the stories of her characters, run the gamut from touching to terrifying. As she speaks and sings her way through this labyrinth of love, we experience the comedic Carson, the pained Carson and the provocateur she became. Accompanied by a guitarist and pianist who also take on characters, Vega moves seamlessly from spoken word to song and back again. She channels McCullers in a way that reveals the meeting of two souls through a work of art.

This event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Rensselaer parking lot on College Avenue.
