OKay OKay. Josie MAY be on a vacation far away, and perhaps you may or may not be just what i needed, and perhaps again you may find it necessary to wear sunglasses at night, but that all only supports the wild and intelligent suggestion that you shall attend this month's Official Unofficial Troy Night Out Afterparty. We are talking about a bunch of grown adults once again wearing leg warmers, mini skirts, and blazers (really?) and it actually being acceptable.

In all serious, I saw Rubix Kube rock the senior day parties for those RPI hooligans and it was a total blast. They are the real deal and an amazing deal for 5 bucks. Not only that, after that you get to transition yourself from the foot tapping and twisting vibes of the 80's to some serious foot pounding and booty shakin dance music brought to you by your pals at goodship.

ABOUT FAUST
Faust (German for "Fist") is a band from Germany that first became famous in the '70s, particularly in Britain. They are frequently credited as being one of the two or three most important/influential "Industrial" or "Post-Punk" rock bands of all time (though, at the time, they were categorized as so-called "Krautrock", along with bands like Kraftwerk and Can). And, as it happens, one of the founders, Jean-Herve Peron, lived in Schenectady for a year, running the half-mile for Mont Pleasant High School during the '67/'68 school year!

The bands influences include the Velvet Underground, Zappa and Pink Floyd, as well as the music and theories of serious 20th Century "classical" composers, such as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Faust will be touring with original members Jean-Herve Peron and Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, along with James Johnston (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Lydia Lunch) and video artist/painter/musician Geraldine Swayne.

Press

"There is no group more mythical than Faust." â€"Julian Cope

"Faust are essential, not just as a history lesson, but as a living legacy and as a reproach to an underachieving age." â€"Melody Maker

"A radical mix of Musique Concrete, Stockhausen, the Velvet Underground, and moments of almost pastoral beauty." â€"NME

"Faust were first!" â€"Time Out

"Anyone who's loved the last half-decade's re-invention of the guitar, (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine et al.), will instantly recognize Faust as a prime ancestor of 'our' music." â€"Melody Maker

[HvEXAS] EMPAC | THE FALL 2009 SCHEDULE

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
EMPAC
News

This Fall, the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, New York presents a full schedule of performances, screenings, installations, festivals, and talks in which funk meets Futurism, vacation days are documented and dissected, hip hop hits the theater stage and Andy Warhol's film Sleep becomes the backdrop for a slumber party.

Following the resounding success of our first year in the new building, the upcoming events build off that momentum while continuing to push people's expectations. Whether there is an event happening or not, EMPAC is the place to be. With ongoing public installations and exhibits set up on the mezzanine, within the 360-degree screen and hidden off the beaten path, you will be able to discover new works created here by artists in residence.

It all starts off with Contact Ensemble's Elevated on Thursday September 3, an evening of music by composer David Lang, accompanying (or accompanied by) a film by a major visual artist. Next up is the Japanese noise / percussive psychedelic group Boredoms with Atlanta's ambient punk band Deerhunter on Friday September 11. The latter is the premiere of the New Nothing series, which tackles the (age-old) complaint that there is nothing new happening in music, all while in a physically transformed concert hall.

EMPAC will also continue to support the creative and intellectual work of the Rensselaer community with performances, lectures and research projects.

To stay on top of everything that EMPAC is up to this Fall, point your browser to our website (updated frequently) at http://www.empac.rpi.edu/.

[HvEXAS] Reminder: Dance Lab, August 21st, Valentines

Dance Lab This Friday August 21st Valentines, 17 New Scotland Ave 18+ $5 Cover 10pm to 3am Robin Moreau: Robins sound much in the same way, say, free jazz is. On first listen, the genres are practically opposites, but in approach and execution, they are remarkably similar—it isn't about the melodies, it's about the sounds and the feelings. The "challenge" in free jazz is to follow all the different parts down their winding paths and to see the craft and invention in its rendering. The "challenge" in dub techno is the opposite, to find the excitement and movement in what at first sounds like a static and unmoving piece Lazer N Blazer: Their sound consists of variations between house or Italo house and deep house influenced sounds and a slower R&B-influenced (under 119bpm) beat consisting of bass drum, snare, and hi-hats programmed in certain laid-back, swing-beat patterns; plus soul, Latin, African, funk, and dub affectations; and production techniques borrowed from other styles of dance music that were popular at the time. Vocals are sometimes present, but much of their music is instrumental. The sounds of acoustic instruments such as guitar and piano are sometimes incorporated. Scooby Carolan: Scooby's sound consists of Tech house, like progressive house, represents a fusion of house and techno. However, whereas progressive house tends to incorporate atmospheric, ethereal, almost ambient sounds and is often mixed to varying degrees with trance and progressive trance, tech-house tends to have more in common with soulful deep house, traditional Detroit-style techno, and contemporary minimal techno, with which it is often mixed in practice. As one reviewer for Amazon.com suggested, this style fuses "steady techno rhythms with the soul and accessibility of house." This Friday August 21st Valentines, 17 New Scotland Ave 18+ $5 Cover 10pm to 3am
