[HvEXAS] Allan Holdsworth coming to Proctors

Just a head's up... tickets are now on sale for ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, perhaps best known in the U.S. for his work with ex-YES/KING CRIMSON drummer, Bill Bruford.  Or maybe from his work with Jean-Luc Ponty.  In any case, Eddie Van Halen considers Holdsworth to be nothing less than a guitar God, so please help spread the word about this rare opportunity to see Holdsworth perform here in the Capital Region.

Thanks!

Paul

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH TO PERFORM AT PROCTORS TUESDAY, MAY 5

TICKETS GO ON SALE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19 AT 10 A.M.

Schenectady, NY- Proctors has announced the addition of Allan Holdsworth featuring Jimmy Johnson & Chad Wackerman to the 2008-2009 lineup with a performance in the GE Theatre on Tuesday, May 5 at 7:30 P.M. Tickets go on sale Friday, December 19 at 10 A.M.

Allan Holdsworth is widely regarded by fans and contemporary musicians as one of the 20th century's most prominent guitarists. He is one of a handful of musicians who has consistently proven himself as an innovator in-between and within the worlds of rock and jazz music. Many of music's best-known instrumental masters cite Holdsworth as that rare and shining voice—a legendary player who continues to push the outer limits of instrumental technique and the electric guitar's range of tonal and textural possibilities. Particularly during the 90s, Holdsworth has enjoyed the recognition so many musicians strongly feel he deserves, given that he has developed his career outside the big label mainstream and has consistently produced his own recordings with complete creative control since the mid-80s. Despite the uncompromising nature of Holdsworth's predominantly genre-defying solo projects, he's no stranger to all-star jazz festival line-ups or large venue rock audiences. Musician Magazine placed Holdsworth near the top of their "100 greatest guitarists of all time." There's never been a shortage of media attention or acclaim for Holdsworth's accomplishments and originality. An inductee of Guitar Player Magazine's Hall of Fame, Holdsworth is a five-time winner in their readers' poll.

Beyond his ability in improvising mercurial solos and sculpting the guitar's voice into an ever-expanding range of textures and colors, Holdsworth has dedicated his energies to developing many different aspects of guitar technology. This has included new "baritone" variations of the instrument, his own custom 6-string designs (one most recently manufactured by Carvin), the invention of electronic components for the recording studio, and exploring the possibilities of guitar-based synthesizer controllers. Holdworth's ability to improvise over complex and challenging chord voicings always reveals a deep emotional base and a strong, imaginative personality that is as instantly identifiable as any among Holdsworth's generation of guitar and jazz masters.

Building on the supreme sonic craftsmanship Holdsworth realized in his home studio in Southern California, The Brewery, Holdsworth's latest solo recording is certain to be singled out as one of his greatest musical masterpieces. The Sixteen Men Of Tain marks a further exploration of traditional
jazz motifs, and, as a first on his solo projects, an acoustic rhythm section. Holdsworth's tenth solo album marked the debut of a new band formed with bassist Dave Carpenter and drummer Gary Novak, both West Coast session men. First released in 2000, a special edition with two additional tracks was released via Eddie Jobson's label, Globe Music, in summer of 2003. Tain marked a new direction in a forward-looking jazz vein and blended together a new vision explored to a degree in the more traditional jazz arrangements found in "None Too Soon."

One frequent topic of discussion among Holdsworth devotees was the fact that after well over a decade of touring with stellar players, Holdsworth had never approved the release of any live recordings by his bands, or any of those with him as a guest performer for that matter. In Fall 2002, Sony Japan released Holdsworth's first ever live recording, featuring Jimmy Johnson and Chad Wakerman in which Sony featured the trio's performance show as a showpiece for their next generation of state-of-the-art five-channel sound technology.

In the past decade Holdsworth has varied his music career, engineering and inventing electronic sound-processing tools, including The Harness. He has several unique electric guitar designs now produced by Carvin, and has worked with luthier DeLap in conceiving custom baritone and piccolo guitars. In fact one of the larger and longer baritones is featured on all three improvised pieces in the
new live album, Then! In his expanded and improved home studio, Holdsworth is already writing material for a new album of original pieces, and is planning to participate as a guest musician in several other projects as an engineer/producer. Whether he is playing instruments with the latest electric guitar innovations, piccolo, baritone guitars, or the Synthaxe, Holdsworth remains never quite satisfied in his eternal "quest for the perfect tone."

Tickets for Allan Holdsworth at the GE Theatre at Proctors on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. are $30. Tickets are available at Proctors Box Office, (518) 346-6204, or online at proctors.org.

[HvEXAS] TONIGHT! The HA! Man / Dino Petrocelli / Art Night Schenectady

From South Africa, The HA! Man makes music that is both "dangerous" and beautiful.  To learn more, and to view a promo piece, please visit the following url:
http://www.hamanworld.com/

To buy tickets, please visit:
https://tickets.proctors.org/TheatreManager/online?btnSelectEvent&PB_SEQ=6052

Note that tonight is also ART NIGHT in Schenectady, so - in addition to The HA! Man - there's quite a bit more going on.  A couple of the things I'm particularly excited about include a custom motorcycle show in Proctors GE Theatre, and the associated Dino Petrocelli Motorcyle Photo Art exhibit in the Proctors Gallery:
http://www.proctors.org/events/2938

Additionally, there will be spontaneous performances ("Pop Up Plays") throughout the facility tonight (with musical accompaniment by experimental vocal group, F'Loom):

Hope to see you there!

[HvEXAS] DRONE marathon on Saturday!!

So...  Just a few days until our massive (or massively crazy) DRONE marathon!  We'll be at the Upstate Artists Guild on Lark St. in Albany from noon to midnight, and the sound will be continuously evolving, so stop by when you can!  And if you're really adventuresome, why not stay for the whole thing and experience something very rare in live music.  Totally free!

ALBANY SONIC ARTS COLLECTIVE presents a celebration of its first anniversary.  Come join us as we offer a 12-hour continuous live drone performance:

                    A RIVER OF DRONE

                                           The Upstate Artists Guild

247 Lark St.

Albany, NY

Saturday Nov. 22, 2008

                                              12 Noon Until Midnight

                                                           Free

Capping off a compelling first year of performances that ranged from the intensely quiet Berlin sound master Andrea Neumann to the roaring noise of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, with many stops in between, the Albany Sonic Arts Collective (ASAC) is proud to present our first anniversary celebration at the Upstate Artists Guild. For this very special event, several ASAC sound and video artists will be collaborating live to create an immersive sonic and visual environment. The "drone" is a part of life, from the constant hum of electricity to the constant rush of traffic around us. Music from all parts of the globe has drawn inspiration from the sounds found in drones. In celebration of the universal harmonic power of drones, the ASAC musicians will conjure a continuous river of sound, building on sustained tones and repetition.

Inspired by LaMonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music and Dream House installation, along with the music of Charlemagne Palestine, Phill Niblock, and others, the goal is to develop a musical vehicle for immersion, reflection, deep listening, meditation, and concentration. Video projections throughout the gallery will accompany the ongoing music. Attendees are encouraged to bring pillows, chairs, and snacks, and to stay for as little or as long as they would like. Unlike a traditional performance, performers will be located throughout the gallery, and may move during the performance in order to explore subtle acoustic phenomena. Attendees are also encouraged to walk around, enjoy the art on the walls, watch the video projections, and discover new relationships to the sound in the drone.

The collectively summoned drone will be harmonically rich and full of mysteries for the listener to discover. By presenting a 12 hour continuous performance, the music will unfold and develop in an evolutionary way unlike any ordinary concert.  Parts of the drone will be quiet, others will be loud; parts will be relatively still, while others will be dynamic. Such diversity mirrors the range of sound we experience in the world every day.

We hope you will join us to meditate, listen, self-hypnotize, bliss out, or simply enjoy a swim in the RIVER OF DRONE!

It is a time of great unrest: braineaters roaming the streets,
innocents sequestered to dungeons (in London, of all places), zombies
(astro or otherwise) doing their zombie-type whatnot, and so much
more. Too much horror business, indeed. It is therefore comforting
in these dark time that there is always the afterpart. Or, this
month, the halfterparty. What is the halfterparty, you might aks?
Well, the halfterparty is all things to all people all the time - or,
in this case, at least half. After Sirsy does its regular Halloween
hours at Rev. Hall, The Official Unofficial Troy Night Out Afterparty
bring the high-powered fluoride sting that is... The Official
Unofficial Troy Night Out Halfterparty. Half the duration, half the
price, half priced Sparks for a half hour (or until they run out) -
but twice the jerks (see below) and many, many times the hotness
(these days, anything goes)! I've said it before, and I will say it
again (well, next year at Halloween, any way): Children in Heat,
unit! See you Friday.

sound:

the jerks (back from japan and jenks tag team on three turntables, 1
mixer, a laptop or two, several glasses of beer, and a whole crate of
YOW to create it like it should have been created a long, long time
ago - drink it in, and put your hands up)

[HvEXAS] MV/EE + Wovoka in SARATOGA this Saturday night!

In between ASAC shows, we wanted to make sure you knew about this great event.  Do try to come up to Saratoga if you can - this is going to be a fantastic double bill, in a great venue.  See you there!

MV / EE & the Golden Road
              Wovoka

The Arts Center
320 Broadway
Saratoga Springs, NY 12866
518-584-4132

Saturday November 1, 2008 at 8:00PM

$5 admission, all ages welcome

Take advantage of this rare opportunity to see Vermont's MV / EE with
The Golden Road
.

MV & EE is a group of musicians focused around Matt Valentine,
sometimes referred to as MV, and his partner Erika Elder. Matt
Valentine was in the neo-psychedelic group, The Tower Recordings.
While the duo recorded under many different names, including MV & EE
Medicine Show, The Bummer Road, and The Golden Road
, most of the
records center around both artists and feature a rotating cast of
additional musicians. Their style is self-described as "lunar ragas",
with many of the lyrics dealing with celestial imagery. They combine
Indian raga style composition with Appalachian folk and
post-psychedelic electrical experimentalism. They use Western and
Eastern acoustic instruments amplified and augmented with effects
such as reverb, delay, and flange.

Read more about them at the ecstatic peace website

http://www.ecstaticpeace.com/mvee

or visit their myspace page at

http://www.myspace.com/mveebummerroad

Then come see them in Saratoga!

Wovoka opens. According to Aquarius Records, Albany underground
legend Wovoka is a mysterious purveyor of "gloriously sun-baked, drug
drenched slabs of psychedelic free folk splendor." Using a variety of
strategies such as "simple tribal drumming, chanted vocals, spidery
psych-rock guitars, and long stretches of blissful Appalachia and
buzzing drone-like raga," Wovoka has been known to mesmerize with
their magical and rare live appearances. Wovoka's highly limited and
beautiful records have become sought after by collectors around the
globe. Their music has been described as "a totally tripped-out late
afternoon drift through a skeletal world of folky twang and abstract
rhythmic shuffle, super laid back and totally hypnotic." An essential
two record vinyl set of reissues is due out soon on Time-Lag Records
from Maine. Go to
<http://www.myspace.com/wovokaholyroom>http://www.myspace.com/wovokaholyroom
for a sample!
