[HvEXAS] Kurt Hentschlager's CLUSTER | Sat 11/03 at 8 PM | EMPAC, Troy, NY

PERFORMANCE
Kurt Hentschläger: CLUSTER
Saturday, November 3, 2012, 8 PM
EMPAC Concert Hall
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY

The next phase in Kurt Hentschlägerʼs generative video and audio work, CLUSTER moves the focus to group behavior and interaction, particularly swarm phenomena. A simple yet absurd setting is proposed—3D human characters turn into a school of fish. In the weightless choreography, human figures appear mostly as a pulsing, amorphous mass, a cloud of blurry matter from body parts and light. The soundscape is created by swarm motion and behavior, as well as changes in light and color.

Chicago-based Austrian artist Kurt Hentschläger creates audiovisual performances and installations. He began to exhibit his work in 1983, creating surreal machine-objects, and since has been working with time-based media, film, video, animation, and sound. Between 1992 and 2003 he worked collaboratively as one half of Granular-Synthesis, employing large-scale projected images and drone like soundscapes. kurthentschlager.com

Select presentations include the Venice Biennale, the Venice Theater Biennale, National Art Museum of China (Beijing), PS1 (New York), Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montreal, Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna), National Museum for Contemporary Art (Seoul), ICC (Tokyo). In 2010, he received a Quartz Electronic Music Award.

Tickets are $18 general admission; $13 non-Rensselaer students, seniors, and Rensselaer faculty + staff; and $6 Rensselaer students (must provide ID for discounted tickets). Seating for this performance is very limited.

Evelyn's Café will open at 7 PM with a full menu of meals, snacks, and beverages as well as a selection of wines. Service continues after the performance. Parking is available in the Rensselaer parking lot on College Avenue.

[HvEXAS] Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca | Thursday 10/25, 7:30 PM | EMPAC, Troy, NY

SCREENING: SHADOW PLAY
Rebecca
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Thursday, October 25, 2012, 7:30 PM
EMPAC Theater
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY
$6

Alfred Hitchcock's only Oscar-winning film, Rebecca, stars Sir Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel of the same name. Located between a ghost story and film noir, Rebecca is a gothic thriller about a love triangle between English aristocrat Maxim de Winter, his young wife, and the shadow of his deceased wife, Rebecca. This film classic contains a haunting score by Franz Waxman and brooding cinematography by George Barnes.

The acknowledged master of the thriller genre, Alfred Hitchcock was also a brilliant technician who deftly blended suspense and humor. Born in England, Hitchcock entered the film industry in 1920, writing scenarios and assistant directing. In 1939, he went to Hollywood, where his first film, Rebecca, won an Academy Award for best picture. During the next three decades, he made a film a year, including the classics Rear Window and Psycho. He received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award in 1979 and died in 1980. He made over 60 films, nearly all commercial and critical successes.

Shadow Play is a series of films that tread nimbly between reality and illusion, acknowledging the artificial nature of cinema. Referencing the tradition of shadow puppetry, the origins of cinema in phantasmagoria, and Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," each film draws on the metaphors of light as reality and shadow as artifice.

In Plato's The Republic, the allegory of the cave illustrates the difference between truth and illusion. Many writers have noted that "Allegory of the Cave" (written c. 360 BCE), bears great resemblance to the contemporary movie theater.

Upcoming films in this series include:

Thursday, November 8
Tarsem Singh's The Fall

Films begin at 7:30 PM; tickets are $6. Evelyn's Café will open at 6:30 PM with a full menu of meals, snacks, and beverages as well as a selection of wines. Parking is available in the Rensselaer parking lot on College Avenue.

[HvEXAS] AKOUSMA @ EMPAC concert | Fri. 10/19, 8 PM | Troy, NY

PERFORMANCE
AKOUSMA @ EMPAC
Friday, October 19, 2012, 8 PM
EMPAC Theater
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY
$18 (discounted tickets available)

Sometimes known as "cinema for the ear," acousmatic music is a compositional form traditionally presented in the dark to help focus and intensify the hearing of the audience. Using dozens of loudspeakers hung in a ring surrounding the listeners, composers and performers manipulate the pieces in real time for an all-encompassing experience as electronic sound is moved around the space.

Highlighting composers from the 2012 AKOUSMA festival, now in its ninth year in Montréal, AKOUSMA @ EMPAC will explore both the traditional acousmatic musical style, as well as a more hybrid version with performers on stage.

Featuring performer/composers Nicolas Bernier, Richard Chartier, Jean Francois Laporte, Martin Tétreault, and Louis Dufort.

AKOUSMA is produced by Réseaux, a composer-run organization dedicated to presenting and commissioning electroacoustic music since 1991. Montréal is the North American hub for electronic music, offering a wide range of festivals spanning dance music, acoustics research, and everything in between. akousma.ca

[HvEXAS] MOHU Returns

MOHU Fest: OCT 5-14

MOHU

OCTOBER 5–14

The MOHU festival returns for ten days this October, celebrating the arts throughout the greater Capital Region of New York.

Beginning Friday, October 5, dozen of venues, artists, and arts organizations from all over Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, and Saratoga counties band together to display the strength and diversity of the cultural programming that makes this area so special. From performances to workshops, large ensembles to individual artists, and gallery openings to lectures, MOHU offers something for everyone.

This year spotlights the various geographic hotspots that make up the Capital Region, with Monday, October 8 through Thursday, October 11 each being individually focused on one of the four counties that comprise MOHU. The beginning and closing weekends will feature a tantalizing course of events at venues both big and small. A kick-off fundraising party on Thursday, October 4 will precede the festival, with all proceeds supporting MOHU. The festival wraps up with Drums Along The MOHU, which culminates in a closing celebration at the Egg that is free and open to the public.

Events will be added continuously to the MOHU website - check back regularly for updates.

Come make this year's MOHU even better than the first, and cement its status as this region's holiday for the arts.

This year's MOHU corporate sponsors include:
