[HvEXAS] Saturday's Best, On The Irish Mist's Back Patio Troy, 5pm to 10pm FREE

Come join us for some fun in the sun at The Irish Mist's wonderful Back Patio this Saturday from 5pm to 10pm. This event is Free and will be hosting guest Djs each month of the summer.

With Dj's...

Lazer & Blazer

Balearic kind of stuff, maybe ? The early-1990s Balearic Beat sound was typified by a distinctive, relatively heavy, slow (115–120 bpm), R&B-influenced beat consisting of bass drum, snare, and hi-hats programmed in certain laid-back, swing-beat patterns; plus soul, Latin, African, funk, and dub affectations; and production techniques borrowed from other styles of dance music particularly House, Dub & Disco. Vocals are sometimes present, but much of the music is instrumental. The sounds of acoustic instruments such as guitar and piano are sometimes incorporated into Balearic House.

Robin Moreau

Robin Moreau was introduced to the scene in 1996 and hasn't looked back. It was a small group of friends who had already been playing, promoting, and dancing around the east coast that fueled her new found passion for the sounds of electronic music. She has been spinning her unique blend of deep, tech, and funky house since 2001. Robin has shared bills with dj's such as Jelo, Tommy Sunshine, Jason Hodges, Lazer & Blazer, and Craig Hamilton. She currently lives in Troy and has joined forces with Artificial Productions.

Scooby Carolan

The Sound of breakbeat pioneers like The Bassbin Twins & Metro L.A. found Scooby Carolan in the basement of a friends house in 1996. "I had heard some electronic music before, but hearing those early Acid & Funky Breaks just hooked me. It was this whole new musical world with strange instruments and sounds. I wanted in."

Within six months of getting his first set of turntables Scooby was spinning in front of large crowds and putting out mixtapes as fast as he could get records. "Part of the thrill was finding records. It was so tough that when you found records, each one was a treasure."

Well over a decade after throwing himself in the mix, Scooby has built a solid reputation in North America. He is a crowd rocking Fidget & Glitch House DJ who's high energy sets range from mellow to pure funk. He's equally at home playing with legendary Drum & Bass DJs like AK1200, Evol Intent, & Ewun as he is with Simply Jeff, Adam X, & Tommie Sunshine.

Scooby Carolan is the head of Massive Audio. A close knit collective of DJs, producers, and promoters centered around a record store of the same name in Albany, NY. He has played all over the USA and released several mixes over the Internet that have received great reviews.

Currently, his newest web project is a House Music & Culture blog called 1TIME that aims to promote not only musicians, but artists and more. Contributions are always welcome! Check out http://www.that1TIME.com or http://web.mac.com/scooby to find out more.

[HvEXAS] EMPAC | Yvon Bonenfant, Beacons | Friday + Saturday, May 29 + 30 @ 8 PM

EMPAC
EMPAC
THIS WEEK!
PERFORMANCE

Yvon Bonenfant: Beacons
Friday + Saturday, May 29 + 30, 8 PM
Free + Open to the Public

There are singers, vocalists, vocal stylists - but not one of those terms quite fits Yvon Bonenfant. Call him an extended vocalist: He uses his virtuosic range in surprising ways to span and encompass extreme emotion and subtle expression. In Beacons, Bonenfant pairs this instrument with video and flashing lights, in a piece that is winsome and magical. Bonenfant's newest work explores the notion of voice as signal and of light as a means of reaching across a darkness that isolates. Beacons is an homage: to love, to loss, to the act of longing.

[HvEXAS] just a reminder (one more to come) may 31

spread the news...

An evening of experimental music (and more)
YGO (St. Petersburg, Russia) and If, Bwana (Chester, NY)

Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:00 PM
Studio at the Seligmann Homestead
23 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf
(home to the Orange County Citizens Foundation and Orange County Arts
Council)
Tickets: $5.00

To reserve tickets please call the Orange County Arts Council 845-469-9168

YGO _ is a multimedia project that includes 3 artists from St.Petersburg,
Russia. YGO is a synthesis of experimental music, video art and unique
ancient Russian singing tradition "Znamenny Raspev" (znamenny chant). One of
the goals of the project is to familiarize the general public with the
history and treasures of Russian Spiritual music and liturgical chant.

As happens so often, the musical structure of the half-forgotten ancient
tradition of Znamennij Raspev has something in common with modern music
concepts. Electronic and 'just intonation' music use the same modes as
Byzantine and Old Russian monodic singing. The essence of the YGO project is
to achieve the synthesis of these two concepts. Thus the project is neither
reconstruction nor restoration of ancient tradition. It's authentic and
distinctive music supported with original video art and may be more likely
referred to modern experimental and avant-garde music trends.

If, Bwana is the experimental music/sound art project of Al Margolis,
currently located in Chester, NY. If, Bwana is sometimes a solo venture and
sometimes includes other musicians. This evenings' version will also feature
longtime collaborators Dan and Detta Andreana.

"If, Bwana is some sort of evil genius working with raw materials which are
never adapted to a genre or a context, because they create one in that very
moment." Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes

tonight!

EMPAC
EMPAC
PERFORMANCE
Rafael Toral, The Space Program
Friday, May 8, 8 PM
$15/$10/$5

EMPAC welcomes Portuguese artist and musician Rafael Toral.

Known best for his masterpiece of avant-rock guitar, Wave Field, Toral has collaborated with such innovators as Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke and John Zorn.

In his newest works, The Space Program, Toral uses physical gestures to control oscillators, acoustic feedback, and filters, creating invisible instruments in the air.

Toral constructs a unique relationship between performing and sound materials. This isn't just mouse clicking and screen staring, but an exhilarating post-free-jazz electronic musical language.

Beacons is an homage: to love, to loss, to the act of longing. Extended vocalist Yvon Bonenfant combines the astonishing and virtuosic range of his human instrument with the magical and winsome qualities of flashing light to explore the notion of voice as signal and of light as reaching. "Humans leave beacons behind when they can't be there," says Bonenfant. They are, he suggests, "the international, technologised language of warning and of absence."
